The roots of Christianity in India reach back to Apostolic times, with tradition having St Thomas the Apostle be the first to bring the Gospel to those shores. Today, the Church in India is a youthful, vibrant participant in the life of the country that contributes to Indian society on scale hugely disproportionate with its numbers. Comprising no more than 2.0 % of India’s population, the Catholic Church is responsible for more than a fifth of all health care provided in the country. The Church has also taken a leading role in the drive for integral human development in India, with over 60% of Catholic schools situated in rural areas. Saturday morning saw six bishops from central and south-western India in to see the Holy Father – the leadership of the Church in parts of India ranging from coastal Karwar near Goa to Mangalore further south, and inland to the central Gulbarga diocese.

EERSTE MISSIECONGRES IN INDIA

BRUSSEL (KerkNet/Ucanews/Asianews/Cathnews) – Van 14 tot 18 oktober vond in Mumbai het eerste katholieke Missiecongres plaats.

Tijdens de opening riep de pauselijke nuntius Pedro Lopez Quintana Indiase katholieken op getuigenis af te leggen van hun geloof door dienstbaarheid aan de samenleving.

„De Kerk is in wezen missionair en elke christen moet het licht van Christus uitdragen en daarvan in eigen leven getuigen."

De voorzitter van de Indiase bisschoppen, kardinaal Varkey Vithayathil, noemt dit eerste Indiase missiecongres „een unieke en historische gebeurtenis“. Ook roept hij Indiase katholieken op moedig van hun geloof getuigenis te blijven afleggen.

BRUSSEL (KerkNet/CBCI/RadVat) ­ De Franse curiekardinaal, Jean-Louis Tauran (foto), reist op 12 en 13 juni naar India. Radio Vaticaan bestempelde het bezoek donderdagavond als historisch, omdat het de eerste keer is dat zo’n delegatie met hooggeplaatsten van het Vaticaan hindoeleiders ontmoet. De achtkoppige delegatie ontmoet in Mumbai (Bombay) twaalf hindoeleiders onder leiding van Shankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami, een van de vier belangrijke Indiase hindoeleiders.

De ontmoeting heeft plaats op initiatief van kardinaal Oswald Garcias, aartsbisschop van Bombay. Kardinaal Garcias spreekt de hoop uit dat de ontmoeting bijdraagt tot een verbetering van de relaties tussen christenen en hindoes. Die relaties stonden de voorbije maanden sterk onder druk door het aanhoudende geweld van radicale hindoegroepen tegen de christelijke minderheid in Orissa. Gedurende de vier maanden van geweld in de Indiase deelstaat kwamen 90 christenen om het leven, meer dan 50.000 christenen werden op de vlucht gejaagd.
