Maria, ster van de evangelisatie

Vanmorgen kwam ik twee getuigen van Jehova tegen. Al dadelijk haalde een ervan haar bijbel boven. De H. Peter Canisius, die het niet met Getuigen maar met protestanten te doen had, schreef toen al (16de eeuw):

"Hoe is het toch mogelijk dat het woord van God dat zo velerlei betekenis heeft, schreefgetrokken wordt in tegenstrijdigheden en onwaarheden? Hoe is het mogelijk dat mensen dit woord van God trots van zich afgooien en met kracht misbruiken, dat ze er moedwillig andere betekenissen aan geven en het tot schade van het rijk van Christus verscheuren? Waarom zo veelvuldige schisma's? Wanneer zijn er zoveel mensen geweest die de belangen van de kerk, van het huis en de ark van God, waarbuiten geen heil mogelijk is, bestreden hebben?"

Dear brothers and sisters! 

The feast of Corpus Domini is inseparable from the Holy Thursday Mass of in Caena Domini, in which the institution of the Eucharist is also celebrated. While on the evening of Holy Thursday we relive the mystery of Christ who offers himself to us in the bread broken and wine poured out, today, in celebration of Corpus Domini, this same mystery is proposed to the adoration and meditation of God's people, and the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession through the streets of towns and villages, to show that the risen Christ walks among us and guides us towards the Kingdom of heaven. Today we openly manifest what Jesus has given us in the intimacy of the Last Supper, because the love of Christ is not confined to the few, but is intended for all. This year during the Mass of Our Lord’s Last Supper on Holy Thursday, I pointed out that the Eucharist is the transformation of the gifts of this land - the bread and wine - intended to transform our lives and usher in the transformation of the world. Tonight I would like to return to this point of view.

We all like spectacular fireworks. They are exciting, impressive, exhilarating.

The Church's first Pentecost had some spectacular fireworks.

The Apostles and other Christians were gathered "in one place together". 

• We don't know exactly where.
• Probably it was somewhere inside or near the Temple in Jerusalem, since right after the fireworks, crowds started to gather.
• It may have been the same large room where Jesus and the Apostles had eaten the Last Supper.
• We are not certain.

So they were all in one place, and then a thunderous noise like a strong wind, like a tornado, came from the sky.

• And then flames appeared. Flames of fire just appeared out of nowhere, spontaneously, hovering in the air.
• And these flames divided up and started floating through the air until they came to rest on each of the people gathered.

But the fireworks didn't stop there. 

• All of a sudden the Christians started speaking in languages that they didn't know.
• A crowd had gathered by now, with visitors from all over the world who were in Jerusalem for the festival.
• Each one heard the Christians explaining the gospel in their own language.

It was a dramatic, spectacular display.

But we would be wrong to conclude from this that the Holy Spirit's normal way of acting in our life is through dramatic fireworks.

• In fact, it's just the opposite.
• God's action in our life is most often gentle and hardly perceptible at first.
• How does Jesus send the Spirit to his Apostles after his resurrection? He breathes on them - quietly and subtly.
• How does St Paul describe the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church? Like the soul of a body - powerful, essential, but invisible and subtle.

The Holy Spirit works quietly.

Gospel Lk24:13-35

That very day, the first day of the week, 
two of Jesus’ disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them, 
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?”
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”
They said to him, 
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning 
and did not find his body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see.”
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the eleven and those with them who were saying,
“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two recounted 
what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread. 

BRUSSEL (KerkNet) – In zijn homilie op Paaszondag in de Brusselse St.-Michiels- en St.-Goedelekathedraal kwam aartsbisschop André-Joseph Léonard nog even terug op de problematiek van seksueel misbruik. Maar de meeste aandacht ging zonder twijfel naar zijn pleidooi voor een betere communautaire verstandhouding tussen Vlamingen en Franstaligen, waaraan het aartsbisdom volgens hem een mooie bijdrage levert. 

Jezus viert het paasfeest met zijn vrienden. Als een echt gelovige jood. Ieder jaar opnieuw zou men de uittocht uit Egypte gedenken, zoals het beschreven werd in de eerste lezing. De uittocht uit dat slavenhuis speelde een centrale rol in de geloofsovertuiging van de joodse gemeenschap. In dit gebeuren van bevrijding en opstanding hadden ze hun God leren kennen als bondgenoot en lotgenoot: ‘Ik zal er zijn’.

Met een aangroeiende menigte pelgrims is Jezus naar Jeruzalem opgegaan voor het paasfeest. Op het laatste stuk van de weg, in de buurt van Jericho, had Hij de blinde Bartimeüs genezen die Hem aanriep als Zoon van David en Hem om medelijden smeekte. Nu hij kon zien, had hij zich dankbaar bij de pelgrims aangesloten. Wanneer Jezus aan de poorten van Jeruzalem op een ezel gaat zitten, symbool van Davids koningschap, barst een vreugdevolle zekerheid los onder de bedevaarders: Hij is het, de Zoon van David! Zij begroeten Jezus dus met een Messiaanse uitroep: "Gezegend de Komende in de naam van de Heer. Geprezen het komende koninkrijk van onze vader David! Hosanna in den hoge!"

Niet zelden worden godsdiensten beleefd als antwoord op de eindigheid van het menselijk bestaan. De hoop dat het met de dood niet onherroepelijk gedaan is, leeft in heel wat religies. Deze hoop wordt ook in het christelijk geloof beleden. Het uitzicht op een verder leven over de grens van dit leven verklaart mee de ontvankelijkheid voor de christelijke geloofsovertuiging. En toch was het geloof in een leven na de dood eeuwenlang nauwelijks van betekenis in de joodse traditie. Het geloof in Jahwe had alles te maken met het leven hier en nu. Dit vertaalde zich in het vertrouwen dat er uitwegen te verwachten waren uit benarde situaties.

Zusters en broeders,

De profeet Samuël zalft de jongste zoon van Isaï, want God heeft hem voorbestemd voor het koningschap. Niet een van zijn oudere, sterkere broers, maar hem. Nochtans had Isaï hem niet eens voorgesteld aan de profeet. Maar de Heer zegt: ‘Ga niet af op het voorkomen of de rijzige gestalte. Een mens kijkt naar het uiterlijk, maar de Heer kijkt naar het hart.’ Dat zijn heel juiste woorden: wij, mensen, wij kijken naar het uiterlijk. Wij beoordelen iemand op zijn voorkomen, zijn kledij, zijn huis, zijn auto, zijn bankrekening. Gelukkig doet God de Heer dat niet. Hij kijkt in de diepte, voorbij de schijn.

Het is een vergissing te menen dat het christelijk geloof alleen door mannen is verkondigd. In de evangelies wordt op veel plaatsen gesproken over vrouwen die in Jezus' leven een belangrijke rol hebben gespeeld. Om te beginnen natuurlijk zijn moeder, ook nog toen hij aan zijn publieke optreden was begonnen. Het Lucasevangelie (8,3) vertelt dat een aantal vrouwen Jezus op zijn tochten vergezelden en uit hun eigen middelen zorgden voor zijn levensonderhoud. Een van hen was Maria Magdalena, die later de titel apostola apostolorum, apostel van de apostelen heeft gekregen omdat zij de apostelen ervan overtuigd heeft dat de gestorven Jezus wel degelijk uit het graf was opgestaan. En dan was er de Samaritaanse vrouw die in het evangelie van vandaag uitgebreid aan het woord komt. In zekere zin de voorgangster van Maria Magdalena. Ambassadeur van Jezus.
